Preordering Garlic to plant this Fall doesn’t have to be complicated!
Garlic is either Hardneck or Softneck and they differ in several ways, including their flavor, climate, and storage time.
Softneck is the type of garlic you'll find in most grocery stores. The bulb has a mild flavor and a very long storage time. The necks on the garlic are soft, as the name implies, and they can be braid and hung up for storage.
Hardneck garlic varieties have complex flavors and are closer to wild garlic. These typically do better in colder zones. The strength of the flavor is offset by the shorter storage time. The hardneck varieties also produce garlic scapes, which have many culinary uses.
The colder zones (5/6) do best with hardneck varieties. Zones (7/8/9) can generally grow both softneck and hardneck varieties whereas the warmer zones (10+) generally do best with softneck varieties.
I am in zone 7B and will be growing Music, Sicilian Artichoke, and Nootka Rose.
